The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, or UMBC, was founded in 1966 as part of the University System of Maryland. The university campus encompasses more than 500 acres in Baltimore, Maryland. UMBC offers over 90 undergraduate degrees and around 33 master degree programs. In addition, the university offers several scholarship programs, including the Meyerhoff Scholarship Program, Linehan Artist Scholars Program, CWIT Scholars Program, and Sherman Teacher Education Scholars Program. UMBC is organized into various academic units including:

- School of Social Work
- The Erickson School
UMBC officially recognized a number of fraternities and sororities. These Greek organizations are governed by the Inter-Fraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, National Panhellenic Conference, and Multicultural Greek Council.
The sports teams of UMBC are called the Retrievers and compete in the NCAA Division I as a member of the America East Conference. In the 2007-2008 season, the university won the American East Men's Basketball title.
