Overview

The University of Massachusetts Lowell, also known as UMass Lowell or UML, was established in 1894 as the Lowell Normal School and later became Lowell State College. The Lowell Textile School was founded in 1895 and was renamed to Lowell Technological Institute in 1955. The Lowell Technological Institute merged with Lowell State College in 1975 and the University of Lowell was formed. In 1991, the university settled on its present name. The university's campus encompasses more than 120 acres in Lowell, Massachusetts. UMass Lowell is divided into the following academic units:
