Overview

The University of Memphis, or MSU, was established on September 10, 1912, as the West Tennessee State Normal School. Dr. Seymour A. Mynders was its first president. The university had several minor name changes between 1912 and 1941. It became Memphis State College in 1941 and Memphis State University in 1957. MSU adopted its current name in 1994. The main campus covers more than 1,100 acres in Memphis, Tennessee. MSU is organized into the following academic units:
