Overview
The University of Michigan Ann Arbor is a top-ranked coeducational public research university – U-M is considered one of the eight original “Public Ivys.” It is the oldest university in Michigan and the main campus for the University of Michigan system, which also has campuses in Flint and Dearborn. U-M has one of the largest research budgets of any American university and has produced seven Nobel prize winners. Its endowment is in the top five for all U.S. public universities.
U-M was founded in 1817 in Detroit and moved to Ann Arbor in 1837. The campus sits on 3,176 acres of land. The school has one of the largest community of living alumni in the U.S. at an estimated 460,000. U-M enrolls students from all 50 U.S. states and over 100 other countries. U-M offers over 500 academic programs that grant graduate, undergraduate, PhD, and post-doctoral degrees.

The university's sports teams are known as the Wolverines. They participate in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision and the Big Ten Conference. The U-M football program has the best record of wins and winning percentage of any major U.S. university. The Wolverines football team plays in Michigan Stadium, which is the biggest college football-only stadium in the world, holding more than 107,000 spectators. U-M has also seen national level success in ice hockey and basketball.
With U-M's huge number of alumni, the school has a large number of notable alumni. A few of these include: the late U.S. president Gerald Ford, Google co-founder Larry Page, playwright Arthur Miller, actor James Earl Jones, actresses Lucy Liu and Selma Blair, TV journalist Mike Wallace, conservative pundit Ann Coulter, and pop entertainer Madonna.
