Overview

The University of Minnesota Duluth, or UMD, is a regional branch of the University of Minnesota System located in Duluth, Minnesota. It is a comprehensive public, research university.

UMD consistently ranks among the top Midwestern, regional universities in U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges issue.

The university grew out of the Normal School at Duluth, created by the Minnesota Legislature in 1895.

The university offers 13 bachelor degrees in 75 majors and graduate programs in 21 different fields. It also cooperates significantly in the delivery of four Twin Cities-based doctoral programs.

The campus of UMD consists of more than 50 buildings and is spread over 240 acres overlooking Lake Superior. The university is home to the Tweed Museum of Art, the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium, Weber Music Hall and the Marshall Performing Arts Center.

Continuing Education offers credit and noncredit learning opportunities for adults of all ages, from high school through retirement. The Natural Resources Research Institute was established in 983 to encourage economic growth for the state's natural resources-based industries in an environmentally sound manner.

UMD's athletic teams are nicknamed the Bulldogs. They compete in seven men's and nine women's varsity sports as members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Nationally, UMD belongs to NCAA, competing at the Division II level except for Division I men's and women's hockey.

The famous alumni of the University of Minnesota Duluth include Don Ness, current Mayor of Duluth; David Oreck, founder of the Oreck Corporation; Mark Pavelich and John Harrington, members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey Gold Medal team that beat the USSR in the Miracle on Ice game; David Viaene, former NFL player for the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers; Lorenzo Music, the voice of Garfield and Carlton the Doorman on "Rhoda"; and Ann Royer, painter and sculptor. Alumnus James Swenson donated more than $21 million to the school, including a recent donation toward the College of Science and Engineering.

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for major sports.
