Overview

The University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities was established in 1851 and is the oldest campus in the University of Minnesota system. It enrolls over 50,000 students every semester on its two locations in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. The University of Minnesota system has over 400,000 alumni. The campus locations stretch over 1,200 acres of land with the Mississippi River winding through the flagship Minneapolis site.

Established as a land-grant college, the U of M is a public research university with over $600 million in sponsored research awards annually

Between The school's faculty and alumni there have been over 17 Nobel laureates. Notable alumni include: Hubert Humphrey, former US Vice President and 1968 Democratic nominee for President; Walter Mondale, former US Vice President and 1984 Democratic nominee for President; Dr. Christiaan Barnard who performed the world's first heart transplant; Earl Bakken, founder of the medical device firm Medtronic; Deke Slayton, Mercury Seven astronaut; Eddie Albert, actor; Bob Dylan, singer/songwriter (did not graduate); Yanni, pianist and composer; and Jessica Lange, actress.

U of M's intercollegiate sports teams are known as the Golden Gophers. They are members of the Big Ten Conference and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in the NCAA.
