Overview
The University of Mississippi, or UM, is the flagship university of the state. Established in 1848, it was chartered as the first public university in Mississippi.
The university developed the state's first and only Teacher Corps.
The school is also known as Ole Miss, a name adopted in 1897 through a contest.
The main Ole Miss campus covers more than 1,000 acres in Oxford, Mississippi. In addition, the university has three branch campuses in Tupelo/Booneville, Jackson, and Southaven.
Ole Miss offers a number of academic and vocational degree programs and has produced approximately 25 Rhode Scholars.
The J.D. Williams (main) Library boasts several noteworthy features, including the Hall of Mississippi Writers, the James Meredith Papers and the world-renowned Music/Blues Archive.
The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, the only one of its kind in the state, has been recognized by The Atlantic Monthly as one of the nation's "up-and-coming programs." The programs in accountancy were ranked in the nation's Top 20 by Public Accounting Report (November 2008).

The Oxford campus is home to more than 30 research centers. The health sciences campus in Jackson houses schools of medicine, nursing, health-related professions, dentistry and graduate studies in the health sciences; the University Hospitals and Health System; and a medical library.
There is an active Greek life at Ole Miss. Some of the university-recognized fraternities and sororities are Alpha Delta Pi, Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Tau Delta, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Phi Beta Sigma, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta.
The athletic teams of Ole Miss are known as the Rebels.
Best-selling legal thriller writer John Grisham received his law degree at Ole Miss. Other well-known alumni are actors Kate Jackson and Anthony Herrera; former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning and the current New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, and three Miss Americas: Susan Akin, Mary Ann Mobley and Lynda Lee Mead.
