Overview

The University of North Carolina, Wilmington, also known as UNCW, was established on September 4, 1947, as Wilmington College. It enrolled 250 students in its first year. On July 1, 1963, Wilmington College gained the status of a senior college. It became the University of North Carolina at Wilmington on July 1, 1969. UNCW offers more than 70 undergraduate degree programs and approximately 30 master degree programs. UNCW is divided into the following academic units:

  • School of Nursing
  • Watson School of Education

There is an active Greek life at UNCW. Some of the fraternities and sororities are Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Sigma Gamma Rho, Lambda Theta Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Sigma Alpha Omega, Zeta Phi Beta, Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Zeta, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Chi Omega, and Phi Mu.

The men and women athletic teams of UNCW are known as the Seahawks and compete in the NCAA Division I. The university is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association.
