Overview

The University of North Texas, or UNT, was established by Joshua Chilton in 1890. At that time, the university was known as the Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute. In 1988, UNT adopted its current name.

The university is a four-year public doctoral/research University with high research activity, as designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. It is located in Denton, a city of approximately 119,454, and in the Dallas/Fort Worth area of over 6.5 million.

UNT is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees. It is the fourth largest university in Texas and among the 50 largest in the United States.

The university tied for ninth among public national universities in the magazine's "America's Best Colleges" of 2010--the only Texas public university on the list.

The athletic teams are known as the Mean Greens.

Among the famous alumni in the music world are Roy Orbison, Meat Loaf, Tom "Bones" Malone and "Blue Lou" Marini (both members of The Blues Brothers Band and Saturday Night Live Band), and Grammy Award-winners Don Henley, Norah Jones and Pat Boone. Other notable alumni include American Football League MVP Abner Haynes; Pro Football Hall of Famer "Mean" Joe Greene; KDGE disc jockey Josh Venable; Michael C. Burgess, current Texas congressman; Adel al-Jubeir, Saudi ambassador to Washington and former adviser to the Royal Court of Saudi Arabia; Charlie Fern, White House speech writer for First Lady Laura Bush; journalist-author Bill Moyers; 1971 Miss America, Phyllis George; TV star/model Jessie Pavelka; award-winning author/filmmaker Christopher Largen; Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry, and Phil McGraw, host of the TV show "Dr. Phil."

University Of North Texas provides on-campus housing for 5,876 of its 29,995 (full-time) students (as of 2009-2010). The school requires freshmen to live on campus.

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Sun Belt Conference for major sports.
