The University of North Texas was established by Joshua Chilton in 1890. At that time, the university was known as the Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute. In 1989, UNT adopted its current name. The university is organized into the following colleges and schools:

Housing and MealsUniversity Of North Texas provides on-campus housing for 6,043 of its 28,090 (full-time) students (as of 2007). The school requires freshmen to live on campus. Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 20 meals weekly.
