The University of Notre Dame du Lac, or simply Notre Dame, is a private, Roman Catholic, research university located in Notre Dame, Indiana, United States. It was founded by Father Edward Sorin, CSC, on November 26, 1842. It gained the status of university in 1844. The campus is spread across an area of 1,250 acres. The university offers a wide variety of degrees and programs. It is organized into the following academic divisions:

- The Law School
Notre Dame’s undergraduate program was ranked 18th among national universities by U.S. News & World Report for 2008-2009. The Notre Dame Student body represents all 50 states and over 100 countries. There are several religious clubs on campus including the Communion and Liberation of Notre Dame, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, Jewish Club, and Muslim Student Association.

Housing and MealsNotre Dame provides on-campus housing for 6,956 of its 11,657 (full-time) students (as of 2007). The school requires freshmen to live on campus. Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 21 meals weekly.
Notre Dame AthleticsSchool sports include football (Division I-A Independents), basketball (Big East Conference), baseball (Big East Conference), and track (Big East Conference). Notre Dame offers financial aid for athletes.
