Overview

The University of Oregon, or the UO, was established in 1876. The first students registered on October 16, 1876. The first building was completed in 1877 and later named Deady Hall.

The campus has more than 60 major buildings on some 295 acres in Eugene, Oregon--two hours from Portland and one hour each from the Pacific Coast and the Cascade Mountains.

The University of Oregon is a public research university and a member of the Association of American Universities--one of only two such universities in the greater Northwest.

UO offers a number of degree and certificate programs and is divided into several academic units, including:

The fraternities and sororities play an active role in the campus life of UO. Among the notable alumni of the University of Oregon are Lee Bollinger, president of Columbia University; Margo Grant Walsh, vice chair emeritus of Gensler; Phil Knight, co-founder and former CEO, Nike, Inc.; Joe Sacco, comic artist, journalist; Allan Burns, Emmy Award-winning TV producer, screenwriter; James Ivory, director, co-founder of Merchant-Ivory Productions; Ken Kesey, author ("One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"); Ann Curry, Today Show anchor; Rany Shilts, journalist, non-fiction author; William V. Roth, Jr., former U.S. Representative and Senator from Delaware, legislative sponsor of individual retirement plan; Fred Jones, former NBA guard with New York Knicks; Kellen Clemens, NFL quarterback with New York Jets; and Mary Decker, record-setting long-distance runner.

Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 19 meals weekly.

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Pacific-10 Conference for major sports.
