Overview
The University of Pittsburgh, also known as Pitt, is a coeducational, public research, state-related university located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The school was founded as The Pittsburgh Academy in 1787--located in a log cabin near Pittsburgh's three rivers--and is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the country. It became part of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education in 1966.
Today the main campus has more than 90 buildings on 132 acres, in the city's Oakland neighborhood. Pitt also has four regional campuses in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown and Titusville, all in Pennsylvania.
Pitt was selected to membership in the Association of American Universities, in acknowledgment of its position as a top research university. As of 2010, it ranks in top ten nationally in terms of research funds received from the National Institutes of Health.

The athletic teams of the University of Pittsburgh are the Panthers. They have won championships in football, conference titles in many sports and national rankings in basketball, wrestling and volleyball.
Notable alumni include Michael Chabon, Pulitzer Prize-winning author; Bill Cullen, host of many TV game shows; Gene Kelly, legendary actor-dancer; Lorin Maazel, conductor, New York Philharmonic; Fred Rogers, host of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" on public TV; DuJuan Blair, power forward for San Antonio Spurs and All-American; Mike Ditka, Pro Football Hall of Famer; Roger Kingdom, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, sprint hurdler; Andrew Mellon, banker, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, philanthropist; Lauren Resnick, president of American Education Research Association; Gust Avrakotos, CIA gent mentioned in book "Charlie Wilson's War," who armed Afghan Mujaheddin in 1980s; Ben Cardin and Orrin Hatch, U.S. Senators; and Yuan Chang, virologist-pathologist, co-discoverer of cause of Kaposi's sarcoma. Novelist John Irving attended but did not graduate.
