Overview

The University of Rhode Island, or URI, the state's land-, sea- and public urban research institution, was chartered as an agricultural school in 1988 after the Morrill Act.

The school became the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts six years later and later, with a revised and expanded program of study, Rhode Island State College in 1909.

The university adopted its current name in 1951 by an act of the General Assembly. The Board of Governors for Higher Education appointed by the governor became the governing body of the University in 1981.

The main campus of URI covers more than 1200 acres in Kingston. There are three other campuses--Feinstein Providence, W. Alton Jones, and Narragansett Bay.

The university is funded by total sponsored program awards of over $86 million in fiscal year 2009--nearly $69 million from federal sources.

The university is divided into several academic units, including:

  • College of Continuing Education
  • Colleges of Arts and Sciences
  • Colleges of Business Administration
  • Colleges of Engineering
  • Colleges of Environment and Life Sciences
  • Colleges of Human Science and Services
  • Colleges of Nursing
  • Colleges of Pharmacy
  • Graduate School of Oceanography

The Greek life at URI is very active--with more than eight fraternities and sororities, governed by the Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council. In February 2008, the school was recognized by the Northeast Greek Leadership Association for excellence in Council Management, Academic Achievement, Public Relations, Membership Recruitment, Risk Management, Multicultural Initiatives, and Panhellenic Continuous Open Bidding.

The university's Club Sports program consists of 16 competitive, collegiate club teams with over 600 student-athletes. URI competes against recognized club and varsity intercollegiate NCAA programs.

Famous alumni include Lincoln Almond, former Governor of Rhode Island; Dawan Robinson, NBA player for Los Angeles Clippers; Ron Rothstein, former NBA coach, first of Miami Heat; Sly Williams, former NBA player for New York Knicks; Dave Stenhouse, former MLB player with Washington Senators, coach of Brown University team; Jim O'Connor, TV host, Food Network; Christiane Amanpour, chief international correspondent, CNN: Thomas Ryan, CEO of CVS Corporation; Robert Ballard, oceanographer, discoverer of RMS Titanic; Gen.
