Overview
University of St. Mary of the Lake, a Christian university in Mundelein, Illinois, is the main seminary and school of theology for the Honorary Archdiocese of Chicago. Founded in 1844, under the name of Saint Mary’s College, it received a charter soon afterward from the state of Illinois which gave it university status. In 1866, the university, despite substantial enrollments every year, had to be closed due to financial difficulties. In 1921, it was reopened by Archbishop George Mundelein, who is still remembered as the second founder of the institution. In 1986, the graduate school under the university was named the Mundelein Seminary, in honor of its second founder.
The university offers a number of courses in Latin, medieval church history, theology, and philosophy. Aside from regular education, the university also encourages students to do research work on various aspects of Christianity, and it provides them with adequate resources to do so.
