Overview

The University of Southern Mississippi, also known as Southern Miss or USM, was founded on March 30, 1910, as the Mississippi Normal College. The university was renamed to State Teachers College in 1924 and Mississippi Southern College in 1940. Finally, in 1962, it gained university status and adopted its present name. The main campus of Southern Miss encompasses more than 1000 acres in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The university has the following academic units:/p>

Southern Miss has officially recognized several fraternities and sororities. These Greek Organizations are governed by the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, and National Pan-Hellenic Council.

The athletic teams of Southern Miss are popularly known as the Golden Eagles and compete in Conference USA. The present day mascot eagle is named Seymour d'Campus.

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Conference USA for major sports.
