Overview

The University of Utah, also called U of U or simply "Utah," is a teaching and research university and the flagship institution of the Utah State System of Higher Education.

The school was founded in 1850 as the University of Deseret. It adopted its present name in 1894.

The university covers more than 1,500 acres in Salt Lake City.

U of U offers 72 undergraduate majors, over 70 minors and certificates, more than 40 teaching majors and minors, and 95 major fields of study at the graduate level. Students can participate in several interdisciplinary programs, including gender studies, neuroscience, environmental studies, and molecular biology.

The School of Business has been ranked high in listings in both Financial Times and Business Week.

The sports teams of Utah are known as the Utes. Utah sponsors 11 women's and seven men's varsity teams. Its teams compete in the NCAA Division I, and many compete in the Mountain West Conference.

The University of Utah marching band, The Marching Utes, performed in the inaugural parade of President Barack Obama--the only group to represent the state.

Among the notable alumni are Anson Vasco Call II, first Mayor of Afton, Wyoming; Calvin Quate, one of the inventors of the atomic force microscope; John Warnock, a cofounder of Adobe Systems; Cecil O. Samuelson, president of Brigham Young University; William DeVries, performed 1st successful permanent artificial transplant; Craig Arnold, poet; Alan Kay, computer scientist, credited with concept of laptop computer; David Neeleman, JetBlue founder, chair; Lily Eskelson, vice-president, National Education Association; and Stephen R. Covey, business author/consultant.

University Of Utah provides on-campus housing for 4,300 of its 25,563 (full-time) students (as of 2009-2010).

Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 22 meals weekly.

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Mountain West Conference for major sports.
