Overview

The University of Vermont and State Agricultural College, together known as the University of Vermont, was established in 1791. It merged with the Vermont Agricultural College in 1865 and adopted its current name.

The university was the fifth oldest university in New England and the first institution of higher learning to declare public support for freedom of religion.

Also referred to as UVM, the university is spread over 460 acres in Burlington, Vermont, often voted one of America's most exciting small cities. The university is home to 10,371 undergraduates, 1,516 graduate students, 460 medical students and 1,299 full- and part-time faculty. It attracts students from more than 25 foreign countries.

Off-campus grounds include a research park, four research farms; nine natural areas; and the Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory.

UVM is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

UVM has a very active Greek Life. The first fraternal organization of the university was recognized in 1836. Presently there are many fraternities and sororities--among them, Alpha Delta Pi, Omicron Lambda Pi, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Delta Tau Delta, and Alpha Chi Omega.

The campus offers more than 100 student organizations--including many academic, artistic, musical, political, religious and service clubs.

UVM has 18 NCAA Division 1 athletic teams. There are also dozens of sports clubs and more than 20 intramural sports.

Notable alumni of UVM are Jody Williams, 1997 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines; Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie, 85th Lieutenant Governor of Vermont; William Almon Wheeler, 19th Vice President of the United States; Charlene Begley, CEO, GE Enterprise Solutions; John Kilik, film producer; Bob Lobel, sports anchor, WBZ-TV Eyewitness News; Kirk McCaskill, MLB pitcher; Susan Powers, folk artist; E. Annie Prouix, Pulitzer Prize-winning author; and Henry Jarvis Raymond, cofounder of the New York Times. Actor Ben Affleck dropped out after one semester
