Overview

The University of Virginia is a public, coeducational, research university founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States. It is the only university in the United States declared to be a "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO.

The main campus, in Charlottesville, is also referred to as U.Va, UVA, Mr. Jefferson's University, or The University. The schools and colleges that compose the university are:

The University of Virginia was ranked second best public university in the 2009 edition of the U.S. New & World Report 2009 edition. In the 12 years since the magazine began ranking public universities as a separate category, U.Va. has ranked either No. 1 or 2. In addition, it continues to rank among the Top 25 best of all national universities.

The University of Virginia Health System is a nationally renowned academic medical center.

The university has many fraternities, including Pi Kappa Alpha (established in 1868) and Kappa Sigma (1869). Many of the fraternities are located on Rugby Road.

A member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Virginia fields 12 intercollegiate sports for men and 13 for women. U.Va.'s intercollegiate athletics program ranked eighth in the final 2008-09 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, which are based on the combined performance of men's and women's sports during the academic year. Virginia is one of just 15 schools to finish in the Top 30 in the Directors' Cup standings in all 16 years of the program's existence.

Kennedy; his son Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and his brother, Senator Ted Kennedy; writer Edgar Allan Poe; medical researcher Walter Reed; painter Georgia O'Keefe; polar explorer Richard Byrd; four NASA astronauts--Patrick G. Forrester, Karl Gordon Henize, Bill Nelson, and Kathryn C. Thornton; NASA Launch Director Michael D. Leinbach, Pulitzer Prize-winning poets Karl Shapiro and Henry S. Taylor; Director of the National Institutes of Health Francis Collins; journalist Katie Couric; comedian Tina Fey; three-time NCAA Player of the Year for men's basketball Ralph Sampson; three-time Olympic Gold Medalist for women's basketball Dawn Staley; Buffalo Bills founder and owner Ralph Wilson; and philanthropist/founder of Landmark Communications Frank Batten.

University Of Virginia provides on-campus housing for 6,962 of its 22,595 (full-time) students (as of 2009-2010). The school requires freshmen to live on campus.

Athletics
