Overview
The University of Washington, also known as UW, is a public research university in Seattle, Washington. Founded in 1861, the university is one of the oldest state-supported institutions of higher education in the West Coast.
The UW Seattle campus covers 643 acres. It also has branch campuses in Tacoma and Bothell.

The university operates and manages two major medical centers: UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. The university receives more federal research funding than any other public university in the nation.
The 2008 Academic Ranking of World Universities placed UW 16th among the world's top universities. UW ranked 41 out of 130 Tier 1 National Universities in a recent U.S. News & World Report ranking; 20 of its graduate programs ranked in the top 20, and 15 ranked in the top 10 of the magazine's rankings.
UW's sports teams are known as the Washington Huskies. They participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I-A and in the Pacific Ten Conference. Teams include football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, tennis, track & field, rowing, swimming and golf.
