Overview

The University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, also referred to as UW–La Crosse, Wisconsin-La Crosse, or UW-L, is a coeducational, public university located in La Crosse, Wisconsin, United states. It was established in 1909 and was named La Crosse State Normal School. The name was changed to La Crosse State Teachers College in 1926, when the institute received authorization to award baccalaureate degrees. It was re-christened as Wisconsin State College-La Crosse in 1951, after it was authorized to provide baccalaureate degrees in liberal arts. In 1964, the College was finally brought under the Wisconsin State University System and earned its present name.

UW-La Crosse is organized into the following colleges:

  • College of Business Administration
  • College of Liberal Studies
  • College of Science and Health

The campus has a few fraternities and sororities including Sigma Tau Gamma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Xi Delta, and Alpha Phi. Only about 1% of the students are members of the Greek-letter organizations.

The University's sports teams are called the Eagles. The official mascot is The Screaming Eagle. The University sponsors indoor and outdoor track, cross-country, gymnastics, football, rugby, lacrosse, and soccer.

Notable alumni of the University include William H. Stevenson, U.S. Congressman; John Gard, former Speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly; and Andrew Rock, 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist in Track & Field.
