Overview
The University of Wisconsin-Madison, or UW-Madison, is a public research university located in Madison, Wisconsin. The university's roots lay in a clause in the Wisconsin Constitution decreeing that the state should have a prominent public university. In 1848, Nelson Dewey, Wisconsin's first governor, signed the act that formally created the university.
The university became a land-grant institution in 1866. It is the oldest and largest campus and the flagship school in the University of Wisconsin System, a statewide network of 13 comprehensive universities, 13 freshman-sophomore transfer colleges and an extensive service.
UW-Madison's campus sits on 933 acres of land and has a diverse student population of about 40,000 annually.

Van Vleck, also in physics; Saul Bellow, in literature; GŸnter Blobel, Herbert Spencer Gasser, Erwin Neher, and Edward Lawrie Tatum, in physiology or medicine; Paul D. Boyer, Alan G. MacDiarmid, and Stanford Moore, in chemistry; and Theodore Schultz, in economics. Notable alumni in sports are Alan Ameche, 1954 Heisman Trophy Winner, NFL player, Baltimore Colts; Cindy Bremser, Olympic athlete, Pan American Games medalist; Cy Buker, retired MLB player, Brooklyn Dodgers; Eddie Cochems, father of the forward pass; Dan Immerfall, Olympic medalist, member of National Speedskating Hall of Fame; and Bud Selig, baseball commissioner.
