Overview

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a public, coeducational research university located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

UWM is one of two public doctoral research universities in the state, offering more than 29,000 students a comprehensive liberal arts and professional education through 159 degree programs.

The university was originally established in 1885 as the Milwaukee State Normal School. In 1927, the Normal School moved downtown and became the Milwaukee State Teachers College, offering four-year degrees.

In 1956, the Teachers College merged with the University of Wisconsin Extension Division to form UWM.

The sports teams of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee are called the Milwaukee Panthers. UWM has seven men's and eight women's teams that compete at the NCAA Division I level.

Eminent alumni members of this university include Economist Markos Mamalakis and Alok R. Chaturvedi, the Founder and Director of SEAS Laboratory at the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University. Others are Golda Meir (nee Meyerson), 4th Prime Minister of Israel; Ahmed I. Zayed, mathemetician and math professor; Antler, poet; Jimmy Banks, retired soccer defender; Frank Caliendo, comedian, impressionist; actor Willem Dafoe; Drew Olson, sportswriter; Virginia Satir, psychotherapist and family therapist; Aaron Twerski, law professor, former dean of Hofstra School of Law; author Ellen Hunnicutt; Philli Walter Katz, computer professional, creator of the zip file format; and Scott Yanoff, key person in the early days of the Internet, developer of Yanoff List.
