Virginia Commonwealth University is a co-educational, public research university located in Downtown Richmond, Virginia. The university’s campus stretches across an area of around 140 acres. The university first became operational as the medical department of Hampden-Sydney College in 1838. However, with the merger of the Richmond Professional Institute and Medical College of Virginia in 1968, Virginia Commonwealth University became an independent university.
