Overview

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, popularly referred to as Virginia Tech, is a public, polytechnic university located in Blacksburg, Virginia. It was originally established in 1872 under the name Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1896, it was renamed the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute. In 1944, the institution was again renamed the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. The university’s campus stretches over an area of 2,600 acres.
