Overview
Viterbo University was established as a Roman Catholic, liberal arts university in 1890. The Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration established it as the St. Rose Normal School. It began as a sisters' college where nuns were prepared for teaching positions in elementary schools. Classes started in 1923. It was renamed St. Rose Junior College sometime during 1931-1932 and Viterbo College in 1937. The College got approved as a four-year, degree-awarding institution in 1939. It started admitting lay women from 1934 but lost its women's college status when men were allowed admission from 1970 on. It was officially declared a university in September 2000 and renamed Viterbo University.
At present, Viterbo University is sought out for its theatre and nursing undergraduate programs, as well as its master program in Education. It offers over 45 undergraduate majors, 25 minors, and a few graduate programs at its 21-acre campus.
