Overview

Voorhees College located in Denmark, South Carolina, is a private, historically black college affiliated with the Episcopal Church. It was founded as Denmark Industrial School in 1897 by Jessie Dorsey and Elizabeth Evelyn Wright. In 1902, a New Jersey philanthropist, Ralph Voorhees provided the school with a donation to purchase land and construct buildings. The school was incorporated as Voorhees Industrial Institute for Colored Youths in 1904. It became Voorhees College in 1962.

Voorhees College's Mascot is the Tigers. Its athletic program includes baseball, cross country, cheerleading, softball, basketball, volleyball and track & field. The college has many student clubs including the fraternities Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi and Phi Beta Sigma, and sororities Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Zeta Phi Beta.
