Overview
Washington and Lee University, established in 1749, is located in Lexington, Virginia. Also known as W&L, the university was founded as the Augusta Academy and was renamed Liberty Hall in 1776. It moved to Lexington in 1780 and was charted as Liberty Hall Academy. The academy became a college in 1785 and the name was changed to Washington Academy and then to Washington College in 1813. The college was again renamed as Washington and Lee University in 1870. The university, which sits on a campus of over 320 acres, offers education through the following academic schools :
