Overview

Washington University in St. Louis, also known as WUSTL, is an independent, coeducational research university located in Greater St. Louis, Missouri. Named after George Washington, it was founded in 1853 as a nondenominational community of scholars.

The university enrolls students from all 50 states and more than 125 different nations. Washington University has two primary campuses on the western edge of St. Louis separated by Forest Park. The 169-acre Danforth campus has many academic buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 59-acre Medical Campus includes the School of Medicine and the associated hospitals and institutes of Washington University Medical Center.

The university also has additional campuses in and southwest of St. Louis; Clayton; and University City.

WUSTL offers a wide variety of degrees and programs through the following schools and colleges:

More recently, U.S. News & World Report places 20 Washington University graduate and professional programs in their top-10 rankings,including a third-place ranking for the School of Medicine and number-one ranking for the George Warren Brown School of Social Work.

In the U.S. News' undergraduate category for 2008, Washington University ranked 12th among national universities.

WUSTL has more than 200 undergraduate student organizations on campus. It has an active Greek life with more than 10 fraternities and over 5 sororities.

Among the famous alumni of Washington University are H. Richard Niebuhr, theologian; writers Anita Diamont, John Gardner and Fanny Hurst; actors Peter Sarsgaard and Morris Carnovsky; Mark Fogel, muralist; David Merrick, Broadway producer; William H. Danforth, founder of Ralston Purina; Abram L. Sachar, founding president of Brandeis University; Alphonso Jackson, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (2004-2008); William H. Webster, former director of both the FBI and CIA; Jimmy Conzelman, football player and coach, member of Professional Football Hall of Fame; and Barbara Schaps Thomas, Sr. Vice President and CFO of HBO Sports.
