Overview
Wayland Baptist University was founded in 1908 as the Wayland Literary and Technical Institute. It was renamed Wayland Baptist College in 1910, and became a university in 1981 before adopting its present name. In 1951, Wayland Baptist University became the first four-year liberal arts institution in one of the former Confederate States to admit black students. This was three years before the Supreme Court banned segregation in schools.
WPU has 14 campuses in four Texas cities and an additional five states. The women’s basketball team of Wayland Baptist University is recognized for winning 1,300 games, which is the highest for any women’s team in the country. Its mascot is the Flying Queens. Wayland Baptist University is the oldest higher education institution on the High Plains of Texas.
