Overview
West Virginia State University, also known as State or West Virginia State, is a public college located in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. It was established as the West Virginia Colored Institute in 1891. It gained university status in 2004. The university offers a wide variety of degrees and programs in diverse areas of study. West Virginia State University is organized into the following academic divisions:

West Virginia State’s athletic teams are nicknamed the Yellow Jackets. They compete in the NCAA's Division II as a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. "The Yellow Jacket" is the campus newspaper.
