Overview

Westfield State College was founded in 1838 as a normal school in Barre, Massachusetts. It was the first coeducational normal school of the nation. The college is currently located in Westfield, Massachusetts. WSC offers an array of degrees and certificate programs and is most recognized for its Education and Criminal Justice Programs.

Some of the academic divisions of WSC are the business management, computer science, liberal studies and English. The college also offers various scholarships like the Westfield State College Foundation Scholarships, Paul Tsongas Scholarship and Westfield State College Presidential Merit Scholarships.

WSC is home to numerous student organizations and clubs, including the Accounting Club, Business Club, Campus Crusade for Christ, Communications Club, Competitive Dance Club, Dance Club, Equestrian Club, Graphic Design Club and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Many students of WSC have gone on to become famous. Some of them are George B. Cortelyou, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury from 1903 – 1904; Eduardo C. Robreno, the first Cuban-American federal court judge; and Nettie Stevens, who discovered the X and Y chromosomes.
