Overview

The North Carolina Board of Education established Wilkes Community College, also known as WCC, in October 1964. The Board of Trustees of the college met for the first time in January, 1965, and classes began the month of August in the same year. The original campus occupied an area of 75 acres and had three buildings. At present WCC is spread over an area of 150 acres. The college also operates campuses in Ashe and Alleghany Counties which are nearby.

WCC follows an "open-door" policy with regard to admissions. This allows any adult having a high-school diploma to get admission. Apart from offering associate degrees in medical, business, and technical fields, Wilkes Community College also provides a university-parallel transfer program for college. This program provides the first two years of courses leading towards a bachelor degree. Those who successfully complete this program become eligible for transfer to a four-year college or university.
