Overview

Winthrop University was founded in 1886 as Winthrop Training School in Columbia, South Carolina. It moved to its current location in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1895. After a few name and status changes, it was given its present name in 1992. The university was named after Massachusetts philanthropist Robert C. Winthrop, who made the first contribution to the school. Winthrop University is divided into the following colleges:

  • College of Arts & Sciences
  • College of Business
  • College of Visual and Performing Arts
  • The Richard W. Riley College of Education

Winthrop University has a very active Greek Life. The Greek organizations of the university are governed by the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Some of these fraternities and sororities are Pi Kappa Alpha, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Beta Sigma, Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha and Sigma Sigma Sigma.
