Studying Accounting (completion in 1985)

• 10/22/2011
"The school provided a very good, high quality education. The price to attend was very reasonable."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | yes | Good internships for the accounting program. It provides a lot of individual help in the accounting field. |
| Program Reputation | 8 | Larger state schools have more well known reputations. My smaller school was not as widely recognized in my field. |
| Program Quality | 9 | Very good school for accounting. It's not a large enough school to be recognized by some major employers. |
| Instruction | 9 | It had a very good internship program that wasn't offered at larger schools. Excellent professors who were very concerned for the students. |
| How Difficult | 8 | Because it was a smaller school they had a lot of individual work that was to be done. They also offered a lot of individual help which cut down on challenges. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | The internship program was very hands on. Work study programs allowed for hands on learning in the accounting field. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 10 | A very good selection of night classes. And all classes offered different hours to attend. |
| Academic Facilities | 6 | Didn't have a separate business college. It did have conveniently located classes that were centralized. |
| Social Life | 4 | Not a whole lot of activities since it was smaller school. Athletics weren't great because it was primarily an academic school. |
| Placement Services | 8 | Didn't have a lot of support for finding jobs except for in the local area. They did have very good internships. |
| Alumni Network | 7 | Not a very strong alumni program. Not much money donated by alumni or ways to get involved. |

Studying Dual Major - Accounting/International Affairs (completion in 2011)

"The community surrounding the school is great. I was able to get a very flexible, well paying job, and the school itself was difficult without being overbearing. It was a great school for those working towards a degree rather than parties."

| Would Recommend? | yes | I felt adequately prepared in both of my degrees to progress into a career with them from the school, and honestly, that's all I could ask from a university. The university takes its academics very seriously. It is ranked in the top 10 public schools in the south if I remember correctly, and it is for a reason. My experience at that school was well worth the cheap tuition that I paid. |
| Program Reputation | 5 | Murray State was more well known for its business and computer programs. Its laurels did not rest upon its accounting program. |
| Program Quality | 8 | Having not attended classes at other schools, I can only judge my school based on its contribution towards my education, and I feel it was very worth it. The school provided me with a solid foundation from which I was able to work upwards; essential for a field as comprehensive as accounting. I still want to possibly go back for my masters to focus on accounting in the international arena. |
| Instruction | 10 | The school I attended was small and the classrooms were also, generally around 15-20 students per class. All of the accounting professors had doctoral degrees and were available and committed to student learning. |
| How Difficult | 5 | I've always had an incredibly easy time in school, both pre and post-secondary education. I found accounting somewhat difficult in the intricacies of the field and how the content was continually reused. My other major was not comprehensive, and thus much easier to complete. The work load was less than my other major, though. In that aspect, it was very easy. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | How learning was accomplished was most times up to the professor. One teacher would hold your hand through the material and provide many hands-on examples, while another (one of my favorites) expected students to read and work problems on their own, learn by themselves, and he would be there to assist learning rather than to teach. The book prevailed through much of the program, though, as the preeminent method of teaching. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 8 | Classes were offered at nights and often for month long chunks during the summer. Much of the MBA programs is offered at night as well for those who have jobs but want to complete it. I was often able to come up with the schedule that I wanted regardless of when I scheduled. |
| Academic Facilities | 6 | Professors were very accessible, but the actual resources provided were very weak. Much was spent on aesthetics (new library) while the library content was not up to par. Class advisors tended to not care about students after they had scheduled, at least in my experience. The professors were the most invaluable tool though for learning. |
| Social Life | 3 | School spirit was only at a high when athletic teams were doing well. Most of the parties I attended were not school sponsored and those that were tended to be as expected - predictable and boring. |
| Placement Services | 4 | Job placement rates were actually high, but career assistance consisted of going to a once per semester career fair. Much of the work in actually finding a career was placed upon the student, as I feel it should have been. Going into a family business makes one too relaxed. |
| Alumni Network | I was not very active in my university other than attending classes as I had taken time away from college when I graduated high school, and was married with a child by the time I graduated college. I stayed much in my own world, as I do now. Murray for me provided an opportunity, not an experience. |
