Tulane University • New Orleans, LA
Studying Finance (completion in 2011)

"I made a great network of colleagues, learned tons from great professors, engaged on campus to enjoy my time, and would do it all again without thinking twice. I can't wait to get back to campus for alumni events."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThe huge alumni network is great with getting leads on positions. Academically, we are top ranked, and are consistent top performers. There is plenty to do, the class is a great cohesive mix of backgrounds, and you're given enough freedom to make the program your own.
Program Reputation9#4 in the US, and #24 worldwide. I'd say that's pretty solid.
Program Quality9For a newer program, the specialized masters degree offers a specialized skill set from a renowned university. The alumni network is fantastic, and the reputation of our business school is second to none.
Instruction9Lots of the learning was on the case-study method, but we also had lots of independent research projects. We had to develop plans and models from the ground up. In addition, we had the traditional lecture/seminar sessions to balance it all out.
How Difficult7My undergraduate majors, study abroad, and work experience all prepared me very well for the rigorous course load. I still found myself on campus in-class, or doing homework/studying for at least 40 hours per week.
Hands-On vs. BookishWe had a blend of case-study, seminar/lecture, and projects. This gave us time to sit back and take notes, get up and really make things happen, or see how others already played the game. It was a great blend of material.
Schedule Flexibility5Not the best. The courses were taught by industry professionals, which means you had to work around their schedules. Many were night classes, and some courses only had one section offered. It really held back the amount of electives one could take, due to scheduling.
Academic Facilities10We had immense resources at our disposal. The business school had their own library, computer labs, locker room, food service, etc. It was a self-contained unit, and really made us feel like a 'family.' We also had study/group rooms to use for projects, and the professors were always up to help however they could.
Social Life7I had a great time at Tulane, but because it is a smaller, private school, the sports programs weren't great. There was tons of school spirit, but nobody took us seriously without a solid athletics program.
Placement Services10I utilized the career services office to help with my job process, but found the jobs on my own. They offered great support/help, but were not great in giving us great leads.
Alumni Network10Being from a large, private university, the network of alumni spans nationwide. The business school, and university as a whole, hosts many alumni events, and they are still very active in current student interaction.

Tulane University • New Orleans, LA
Studying Economics (completion in 1997)

7/27/2011

"Having a degree from a prestigious school is always worthwhile. As a bonus, my extracurricular activities provided me with the networking that set me on my eventual career path."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeSince I ended up working in real estate and accounting, I might recommend a less expensive school, which would be just as good for entering my particular field.
Program Reputation8Tulane is well respected for its undergraduate education but is not known specifically for its economics program.
Program Quality6I don't use my major directly. Having a background in economics helps me understand some of my work better, but I can't really say I use my major in my work.
Instruction7The instruction was generally good and I learned a lot, but most of it doesn't apply to my career, especially the courses dealing with international economics.
How Difficult8The subject material was challenging and I had to study hard to earn good grades.
Hands-On vs. BookishEconomics doesn't really lend itself to lab work or hands-on learning. Most of my academic work was based on studying the textbooks and class notes.
Schedule Flexibility9I never had a problem setting up a class schedule. I never took an online or summer course.
Academic Facilities10Class sizes were small and almost all of the classes were taught by professors, not graduate assistants. The computer department provided good online support for the classes for which such services were needed.
Social Life10I enjoyed my time there a great deal. The football team was terrible during my four years and the basketball team underachieved, but there were a lot of great entertainment options both on and off campus.
Placement Services5I haven't used them in a long time, so I can't give an accurate rating.
Alumni Network6There are various alumni clubs throughout the country, but I haven't benefited from them career-wise. I've always had more success by simply sending my resume directly to small business owners.

University Of Louisiana At Lafayette • Lafayette, LA
Studying Finance, MBA Program (completion in 2000)

9/6/2011

"I had a great experience at ULL. I recommend the school to my friend's children who are applying to different colleges."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI think the Accounting program and MBA program are excellent. I learned a lot and use that knowledge at my current position.
Program Reputation10Many students from around the world attend ULL for the MBA program. The reputation of the program was well known.
Program Quality10I had excellent teachers and the program was outstanding. I found the curriculum very easy and I scored well.
Instruction10The instructors were very knowledgeable and taught their subjects well. I learned a lot from them and will remember lectures for many years.
How Difficult1The work load was very manageable. The curriculum was challenging and I did well.
Hands-On vs. BookishI believe my school was more book learning oriented. I attended a few field trips to local businesses but there should have been more.
Schedule Flexibility8I think the class schedule flexibility was alright. I had some problems scheduling but I was able to work around my schedule.
Academic Facilities8The library was being remodeled at the time so it was somewhat of a mess, but the end product was excellent. The computer lab was outstanding!
Social Life8The athletic events were very enjoyable. The accounting program frequently had events as well.
Placement Services5I didn't receive any advice on career planning. The job placement aspect was non-existent.
Alumni Network10The alumni association is excellent. I still receive invitations to events, games, etc.

Delgado Community College • New Orleans, LA
Studying Accounting (completion in 2006)

9/24/2011

"Delgado changed my life, and my view of myself. Everyone can benefit from education, and Delgado is a great place to start that path."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeCommunity college is good for prerequisites, a background in Accounting is necessary to get going.
Program Reputation5Delgado has a great reputation of preparing students for higher studies. The Accounting program will get you in the door, if you've done well.
Program Quality6A two year Accounting degree gave me a little bit of a head start, but not much. It took over four years to get the accounting position I was seeking. I don't think my school is the best for Accounting majors, but I might be wrong; I have no interest in being a professional accountant.
Instruction8Staff at Delgado care about students. If you need help, and you look for it, it's there, at every level of the college.
How Difficult5A student chooses his/her level of challenge, based on hours and labs. With the college's cancelation policy, you can back out of a bad decision.
Hands-On vs. BookishAccounting, at this level, must be book-based. But I saw lots of hands-on learning in other areas of study.
Schedule Flexibility10I tailored the program around my schedule. With some work, I always managed to make it all fit.
Academic Facilities7They had both a tutor lab and a specific computer lab. Teachers were always available after hours.
Social Life10As an introvert, I loved the ready acceptance of many different groups. I joined 5 different groups in 3 years!
Placement Services5I never found a need for Delgado's placement program. But the one time I dropped by that office, the student worker wasn't very helpful.
Alumni Network5I have no post-graduation contact. I get some letters, but they just seem like fundraisers to me.

Southeastern Louisiana University • Hammond, LA
Studying Management (completion in 2008)

10/11/2011

"As a college student I was there strictly for the education to better myself and I did get that education. I do believe there could have been a few more options for the non-traditional student."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI would definitely recommend SLU to others pursuing a career in accounting if they were looking for a local school. However, if they had the option to move away to attend school, I would recommend that be looked into.
Program Reputation9I do not keep up with my school's current reputation much. However, in my area many respectable accountants have attended SLU.
Program Quality8Accounting classes are limited to "traditional" students. I myself worked full time and attended school and it was at times difficult to schedule classes I needed.
Instruction8The instruction I received provided a good basis for my line of work. However, I have learned most from actually working in my position.
How Difficult8Some classes in the program were difficult simply because you are being taught without using the programs used in todays world. Learning how to do things without the technology does help understand the concept and will make doing the actual work easier to understand once in the career world.
Hands-On vs. BookishI would have to say that most if not all of my learning came from books. There is not a lot of hands on work related to accounting.
Schedule Flexibility4They did offer night classes, online classes, and summer classes. However, the classes needed for accounting were limited and often more geared toward "traditional" students.
Academic Facilities7SLU absolutely has many academic facilities and resources. The problem comes in with those resources not always being available for the "non-traditional" student.
Social LifeThis is not an experience I can truly comment on. I was not part of any extra curricular activities since working full time and attending classes at night took up most of my time.
Placement Services4I was not placed by my school's job placement/career services. I do know that they have this available, but I did not take advantage of their services.
Alumni Network5I receive regular mailings from the alumni department. However, I do not participate in any of the alumni activities.

Louisiana State University • Baton Rouge, LA
Studying Finance, Specialization In Internal Audit (completion in 2010)

2/29/2012

"My school both got me a job and prepared me well for it. I do not know what more one can ask for from a school."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesLSU is the best school for a future internal auditor, and is a very good choice for any other business related degree. The professors and facilities are all of great quality. Governor Jindal is cutting too much money from LSU though, so I am worried about its future.
Program Reputation10The Center for Internal Audit is world renown and highly recognized as prestigious by professionals in the industry. The LSU business school as a whole is also high ranked and well respected.
Program Quality10The LSU business school is highly ranked. The LSU Center for Internal Audit is world renown and offered great preparation for the field.
Instruction9I was always surprised and pleased by the quality of my instructors. They were knowledgeable, helpful, and consistently prepared.
How Difficult6I did not have much difficulty performing well. This was mostly because I only had to perform better relative to other students and many of them were slackers.
Hands-On vs. BookishLSU courses are generally taught with a traditional book learning approach. Certain technical computer related courses are more hands on, however.
Schedule Flexibility5Courses fill up quickly and scheduling problems are common. Thankfully they are usually able to be resolved if the student locates the right person to help.
Academic Facilities10LSU had more resources than I ever cared to use. I did enjoy the meeting areas, libraries, and computer labs though.
Social Life9I know LSU has an incredible amount of events and clubs. I unfortunately did not participate in much of these because I had to work and support myself when not in class.
Placement Services10I was referred to my current employer by the LSU internal audit program. They are the only reason I have a good job today, and that is exactly what I wanted from my college.
Alumni Network6I do not utilize the alumni services. I know these services exist and are extensive.

Tulane University • New Orleans, LA
Studying Accounting (completion in 2005)

3/1/2012

"I was satisfied, but that is all. I can't justify the expense of a private university versus a public university."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noAgain, I wouldn't recommend a private university to anyone. Relative to accounting, public colleges provide similar academic programs with the same literature and information.
Program Reputation6Last I checked in U.S. Business Week, Tulane was a top 50 business school. However, they are more recognized for their oil and gas industry efforts.
Program Quality7Great campus and a good program. However, I would never recommend a private university to anyone.
Instruction8The professors were top notch. I would assume that is what dictated the high tuition. Most professors utilized real world scenarios within the course work.
How Difficult7Since I was able to attend several classes at other institutions as a transient student, I do not believe the level of difficulty was any greater. Other course work was comparable.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe nature of the major and the inherent content dictates that the course work is intensive on book learning. We did have required presentations in a professional setting that helped prepare students.
Schedule Flexibility5Online classes weren't an option. The graduate programs had some night classes that met once a week. The summer sessions were very limited in course offerings.
Academic Facilities9The academic facilities and resources of the program were incredible. Computer labs were readily available, as were academic advisors, tutors and labs.
Social LifeMy social experience was non-existent. I was a non traditional student that also held a job.
Placement Services4The school provided some networking sessions. They did not have career fairs or anything of that nature at my time of attendance.
Alumni Network4I receive a publication quarterly from the university. I also receive quarterly requests for donations.
