Studying English; Communication (completion in 2011)

• 9/30/2011
"It was the perfect mix of work and play. I studied hard and learned a lot while I was there, and also met a lot of great people I will be friends with for the rest of my life."

| Would Recommend? | yes | I would recommend my school to anyone studying anything they offer as a major, because it's a great school for whatever you are looking for. I didn't intend to be an administrative assistant, and most people don't end up doing what they majored in. |
| Program Reputation | 9 | I'm not sure what the reputation is for the English department, but I know that the Communication department is one of the best in the country. They only accept the top 100 students that apply to be part of it. |
| Program Quality | 8 | I responded with an eight, because I would rate the English program as a six, and the Communication program as a ten. The English program could offer a lot more in the way of practical writing. The Communication program is perfect; I had very impressive professors. |
| Instruction | 9 | Most of the professors I had at UD were highly qualified and very good teachers. I learned a lot from them, both academically and otherwise. The Communication Department excels in their choice of professors. |
| How Difficult | 8 | The work load was greater than the challenge. It was only challenging in the sense that there was a lot to get done in a short amount of time, and maintaining quality work is hard when you're rushed. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | It really depends on the class and the instructor, but overall I would say it was pretty evenly mixed. Almost all of my professors required a book of some kind, but much of the course material was taught hands-on. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 8 | UD offers classes throughout the day and at night and on weekdays, as well as online courses. They also offer winter and summer sessions for those who need or want to build up class credit outside of the regular semester schedule. |
| Academic Facilities | 8 | I honestly don't know too much about this because I rarely took advantage of the academic facilities on campus. I imagine that they were very good. I know that the professors were very helpful with offering office hours to students. |
| Social Life | 9 | UD is a great place for any student. All types of people are made to feel welcome because at a school this size you can always find a place to fit in. There are tons of clubs and activities to be involved in, and that helps freshmen meet people. |
| Placement Services | 9 | UD offers programs for both current students and alumni in the job-seeking process. This includes great websites they can access, but also in-person help and training on resume writing, interview skills, etc. |
| Alumni Network | 8 | I'm not too involved with the alumni network at UD, but they often send out emails reminding us of events that we can attend. UD offers a lot of great programs to alumni in job-seeking that are very helpful. |

"Good experience overall. I wasn't very challenged, but that was probably my own fault. I got a degree, which is really all that mattered to me, my parents and the world."

| Would Recommend? | yes | They provided me with a good general education. Always helps to have a degree in something. |
| Program Reputation | 9 | I think it is still good. It was when I went there. |
| Program Quality | 10 | The professors were great and the class sizes were good. It was a well-known and high-quality program, yet still intimate. Resources were excellent. |
| Instruction | 9 | I learned everything I needed for a career in horticulture, even though I didn't stay on that path for long. The introductory level classes required for the degree that weren't related to my major were usually too large. |
| How Difficult | 5 | Overall, I didn't find the majority of classes too challenging. Those relating to my major were more interesting to me, so they felt less difficult than others might find them. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | The nature of my program is very hands-on. Have to be able to see the plants in order to study them. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 5 | I know they offered some summer classes and have evening and weekend programs. Never needed to use them. |
| Academic Facilities | 10 | The professors were very accessible, as was my advisor. The lab facilities were good and even being expanded. Good libraries. |
| Social Life | 7 | They had a reputation as a party school, but I wasn't too interested in that. There were always plenty of parties going on and bars to go to. Football games were very well attended by students. |
| Placement Services | I never really used it. I didn't really have a plan for after graduation, so they didn't seem like they would be able to help me. | |
| Alumni Network | 5 | They still call me asking for donations and they invite me to events. I'm just not interested in receiving any support from them. |

"I had a great time in school and would not trade it for anything. There are some things I would change but for the most part everything was just about perfect."

| Would Recommend? | yes | I am pursuing a corporate career and I would recommend the leadership program to anyone doing that. While my specific job probably does not require an advanced degree, if I plan to progress further I will absolutely use the skills used in my program. |
| Program Reputation | 8 | Since there are so few leadership programs across the country, the one at the University of Delaware is rated very highly. The program also moved into a new college before I left and was growing and improving. |
| Program Quality | 9 | There are very few schools in the U.S. that have a Leadership major. While I was at UD I saw the program grow and change. I think it is a unique opportunity for any student. |
| Instruction | 8 | The professors in my major were some of my favorite. Their classes were unique and hands on and I learned more than in my classes in other schools. |
| How Difficult | 5 | The major was not difficult in the sense that there were hard tests and papers. The major was very hands on and provided a lot of real world experience that would not be considered difficult, but very meaningful. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | My major was almost entirely hands on and there was very little book learning. We did a lot of group work and presentations. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 6 | There were flexible options available but I never took advantage because I was on a normal student schedule. There were night and online options available as well. |
| Academic Facilities | 5 | The library was not one of my favorite places and it seemed that most of the resources were pretty outdated. Most of my professors were pretty accessible, however a lot of them did research so they seemed pretty distracted a lot of the time. |
| Social Life | 8 | I loved my college experience because there was always different things to do. I was in a sorority and attended many social and sporting events. |
| Placement Services | 8 | The job placement program and career assistance at UD was very helpful. I actually got my job through the career website. |
| Alumni Network | 8 | The University of Delaware has very tight knit and proud alumni. While I have not directly benefited from the alumni network, I do know that they are very strong and supportive. |

"I was not happy in the area where the school was. Overall, the teaching ability and social experience at the school was not as I expected."

| Would Recommend? | no | I do not think that anyone should go to school for networking to become an administrative assistant. I did not plan on doing this as a career, but I have come to realize that it seems to be the only way into a good company. |
| Program Reputation | 7 | The school was rated well online for networking. I feel that it is not very hard to teach, as it is ever changing and learned by keeping up with new technology. |
| Program Quality | 3 | I feel that I did not go to school for a fulfilling degree. The credentials I have received have not supplied me with the job I had hoped for. |
| Instruction | 5 | I enjoyed taking the classes very much. The part that I did not think was acceptable was the fact that my beliefs on where it would lead me were incorrect. |
| How Difficult | 3 | I was always good with computers. Going to class was merely a formality. I went to school for computers hoping to get a good job, but instead, I ended up taking an administrative position where I am just told what to do all day. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | My teachers were very fond of handing out a sheet with the details for the week's learning. Every day, we received dittos with multiple problems and were able to leave upon completion. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 8 | I was able to pick from all classes available. All classes were available at multiple times during the day. |
| Academic Facilities | 5 | The technology labs were not any better stocked than any other school I had visited. Most schools that are not mainly geared towards computer technology do not have the highest-quality equipment. |
| Social Life | 5 | The parties were great, as were the football games. Most other sports and events seemed poorly organized. |
| Placement Services | 3 | They never attempted to find any job for me. |
| Alumni Network | 2 | No alumni support. |

Studying Office Administration (completion in 2012)

"For the program I decided to go with, the school had everything I needed. When I needed help, it was there. If I wanted to get work done ahead of time, the assignments, schedule and due dates to be completed were laid out on a calendar."

| Would Recommend? | yes | Yes! I would very much so. It's inexpensive and it's in a good area. Del-Tech has 4 campuses throughout the state of Delaware, so it's handy. You can do online or on-campus classes. You pick your schedule and what suits you! Very pleased with the school. |
| Program Quality | 10 | It wasn't a bad program. I was able to take the majority of the classes online. It was very swift and straightforward; a really good layout of courses and pre-reqs. |
| Instruction | 10 | The quality was really good and I learned a lot from the courses I took. I took a lot of different courses, such as PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, keyboarding, and Introduction to Business. |
| How Difficult | 2 | It was very easy for me, as I had previously taken similar courses in high school. The program layout was easy and user-friendly, so it made the process very swift. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | Very book-based, but the major is a book-based type of major. It's not like nursing; hands on isn't too needed. Office administration is pretty straightforward. | |
| Academic Facilities | 9 | Our campus (Terry Campus in Dover) had a really good variety of resources to help you be successful, including bookstores, libraries, various tutor programs, and labs. |
| Social Life | Most of my classes were online, so I stayed to myself. I was too focused on getting work done, and I wasn't really worried about socializing. |
