University Of Kansas • Lawrence, KS
Studying Psychology (completion in 2006)

"Looking back on my experience and my current job placement, I realize that one of the most valuable amenities a school could offer is simply one on one personal guidance. I feel as though I would be much happier in my current career if there were someone to help me realize the opportunities available for someone completing the degree I did."

Would Recommend?yesI really enjoyed my experience at KU and think most people would. The classes were phenomenal, the teachers kind and helpful, and it could easily be completed in four years. I would recommend taking the harder courses because they are smaller and you do receive a lot more guidance from your actual teacher.
Program Reputation8I believe they are highly rated in the area of Psychology, though they are not an elite school. Most of my instructors had completed well thought out research and were respected in their fields.
Program Quality4I really enjoyed my major and would happily follow the same path if I had to do it again. The thing I thought was missing was Academic Advising and as a college student, I was naive and didn't realize how much I needed to advocate for myself.
Instruction8I had some amazing instructors who I still think about today. I had others that were about as excited to come to class as a person is to come into a boring job on Monday mornings. Passion is essential; some have it, some don't.
How Difficult5I think I made my program more difficult by selecting more difficult classes. I think the program is set up so that there are various levels of difficulty and I would consider mine to be moderate. I could have definitely handled more.
Hands-On vs. BookishI spent an unbelievable amount of money on books that were required but seldom used. I also had classes that only used/referenced the text book. All in all, I think there was a good variation of both techniques used.
Schedule Flexibility8I took early morning, evening and summer courses so I feel like there were plenty of time frames offered and I could still work. I didn't notice the online options as I preferred in person courses, but I am sure there are several more offered now.
Academic Facilities5Libraries and computers were always accessible. Generally, teachers were more than willing to meet individually if I were to need help and study groups were arranged for large tests. Again, the only problem I had with the actual school was the lack of initiated support from advisors.
Social Life8The school spirit was amazing and one of the primary reasons I chose KU. The basketball team is one of the top teams in the country and we have some of the most dedicated fans. Although football struggles, everyone is still there to offer their full support and they are kind to the opposing teams.
Placement Services3Again, I think this could use major improvement and I think it had something to do with limited services for the amount of students. I didn't take the initiative like I should have, but I think this is to be expected from a college student newly on their own. Advisors should reach out to each student.
Alumni Network6As I mentioned, I would have appreciated more guidance. As a college student and coming from a family that accepted you exactly as you were, meaning expectations were incredibly high, I could have used a little extra push and someone to help me focus on one area. I would have liked someone to help me set long term goals.

Would Recommend?noThere are more flexible programs out there now. I would investigate the options.
Program ReputationI don't have any idea.
Program Quality5My major provided background, but not specific skills. That is how many college programs are.
Instruction5I wish teachers taught what would be important in the workplace. Many classes are what the teacher learned in another school and not on the job.
How Difficult7There is too much busywork (reading, etc.) and not enough on-the-job experience in college. Even basic (non-tech) school should be about doing verses reading.
Hands-On vs. BookishThis is my primary complaint about college. Books should be less expensive, too.
Schedule Flexibility1When I was in school, it was regular attendance. These days, schools offer a lot more options.
Academic Facilities5The psychology classes were always in the basement. We should have met in a lab or classroom setting.
Social Life1I couldn't care less about football. I enjoyed my roommates.
Placement Services2I never heard of any assistance. It's based on who you know on the outside.
Alumni Network5We get the average newsletter. It's just not very in depth and has nothing written by former students.

"I loved Baker. I would not change my undergraduate college for any other college."

Would Recommend?yesI have recommended Baker to many people. My sister also did her graduate school from Baker.
Program Reputation8Baker's reputation has been increasing and they have made a lot of positive changes in the program. I think it is one of the best schools in Kansas for business degrees.
Program Quality8I think Baker is a very good school for studying business, but I do wish it had more options for classes.
Instruction7I don't think any university can prepare you for your job. However, Baker did provide a lot of help in teaching me how to multitask and handle different projects.
How Difficult7I really enjoyed my classes, so even when it was tough, I was motivated in the class and it seemed easy. However, there were a lot of classes that were difficult, and I didn't do so well in those classes.
Hands-On vs. BookishIn the beginning of the university program, you do a lot of book learning. However, as you start to get in higher-level classes, you start doing more hands-on projects. For example, in the senior capstone, we had to make a business plan.
Schedule Flexibility2Most classes were only offered one or two different times a semester. However, the graduate school is much more flexible, offering one class a week, and you only do one class at a time.
Academic Facilities7Since it is a small school, they have limited resources. However, the school is not afraid to try to help you get the resources you need.
Social Life7Since it is a small school, there is a limited number of school activities. However, the positive side is that you really get to know all the students and make wonderful friends.
Placement Services3Since it was a small school, they did not have a lot of contacts with companies; therefore, their career services are not very helpful. However, they do try their best and are not afraid to reach out to companies and make more contacts.
Alumni NetworkI do not participate in alumni network and support programs. Therefore, I cannot comment on the programs.
