University Of Louisville • Louisville, KY
Studying Secretarial Science (completion in 1973)

"I feel proud to be a graduate of the University of Louisville and feel like that carries a certain amount of prestige. The University is very well known for many areas - engineering, law, medical, and business."

Would Recommend?yesAlthough it has been almost 40 years since I graduated, I feel confident that the University has only gotten better since I left. There is no doubt that they are competent in their training for whatever field you choose to pursue.
Program Reputation10I did not have any issues with obtaining a job right after graduation.
Program Quality10The school did away with "secretarial sciences" by the time I left, but it was always proactive and I felt very confident when I went to work.
Instruction10I had a very well rounded education which allowed me to be promoted from a secretary to an industrial engineer.
How Difficult8The program provided courses that gave me some liberal arts training and other managerial classes.
Hands-On vs. BookishWhen I began my career, I was familiar with most of the tasks I had to perform. There were a few things that I had not seen in terms of equipment but, as it turned out, that particular equipment was out of date already so they did not have it in their curriculum.
Schedule Flexibility9I was able to work the entire time while I went to school.
Academic Facilities10Although I did not live on campus, I had access to the facilities and the professors were flexible when I needed to make changes from time to time. For example, I took one final exam a day early in order to catch a flight out of town. The professor allowed me to come to the office and take the exam there.
Social Life10The University of Louisville is well known for their athletic teams. Because I worked, I was not really able to participate in may other campus events.
Placement Services10My professor actually had me go to take an interview in order to get "comfortable." As it turned out, the employer called me back two months later and I was offered a job.
Alumni Network10The University of Louisville is very good about keeping in contact with its graduates.

"The financial aid isn't perfect. That being said, I had a great experience."

Would Recommend?yesI wouldn't necessarily recommend becoming an English major. However, I would recommend the University of Louisville business program, one of the top rated business programs in the country.
Program Reputation7The University of Louisville is not known for its English program. That being said, we do have great professors in the Arts and Sciences programs.
Program Quality8The University of Louisville Arts and Sciences and English programs are fantastic. My English major helps me in my position to be able to relate to visitors to the office, and also taught me how to communicate effectively. I had many great professors and many great experiences.
Instruction8Most of the instructors were great. Though I had some professors that didn't seem to care as much, I also had professors that really helped me hone my communication skills.
How Difficult7There was some hard work, including a lot of paper writing. However, I believe that the hard work paid off to get me to where I am today.
Hands-On vs. BookishAs an English major, it was very book-based learning. We read a lot of material and discussed it.
Schedule Flexibility10Many classes, especially general education classes, are offered at many varying times of the day or night. Classes are also offered in the summer.
Academic Facilities8The library system at U of L was wonderful, with a few different libraries to fulfill my needs. U of L also offers free tutoring and support, and most of my professors were also very helpful.
Social Life9I met many new people at the U of L. This is in part due to the many events organized by the Student Organization, including parties and other events.
Placement Services3The University of Louisville does offer job fairs. However, I didn't get any assistance in job placement.
Alumni Network5I'm not terribly involved with the alumni program. That being said, alumni seem to be reached out to me fairly often and there seems to be a variety of alumni programs through the school.

Western Kentucky University • Bowling Green, KY
Studying Folklore And Anthropology (completion in 2006)

"I would not recommend this program to anyone. I worked very hard and graduated with honors and have been unable to break out of the federal poverty level since graduating. I made more with a high school diploma, as I wasn't paying back crippling student loans."

Would Recommend?noThere is nothing to recommend at this school. The program is poorly run and without value in regards to preparing individuals for life outside of school.
Program Reputation3The program is one of the worst in the country. It is renowned for turning out poorly qualified, completely unemployable graduates.
Program Quality1The school is one of the few in the country to offer a degree in Folklore. Very few people who go through the program end up working in their field. The school should at least offer classes in Microsoft Office so we're prepared for the jobs we can get.
Instruction4The professors taught us all about folklore theory and how to be respected academics. They didn't tell us there were no jobs in folklore and didn't prepare us for the reality of the job market.
How Difficult7The work was grueling at times. In the first semester 2/3 of the class dropped out of the program. We worked very hard for very little pay off.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe program was predominantly focused on book learning and memorization of concepts. Once or twice a year an event would occur that would allow for hands-on learning opportunities.
Schedule Flexibility1The classes were offered once a year at best. If the student could not adjust his/her schedule for the class schedule, the two year program could take four or more years.
Academic Facilities7The resources were fairly decent. It is probably worth noting that there are only a handful of respected texts in the field and they are rarely updated.
Social Life8The program was very insular, but it did know how to entertain. My only positive memories of the program are from social functions.
Placement Services2The school offered no assistance in the job search. Professors individually offered some insight, but were unable to offer anything of real use.
Alumni Network3There was no support for students while attending the program and upon graduating the only contact with the school is through occasional requests for money. This is not a good program.

"I cannot complain, I just did not participate in much of the on campus activities."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

Would Recommend?yesThe campus and classes are small. The school has a very flexible schedule.
Program ReputationHave not kept up with the program. I have not seen anything that would indicate it has a bad reputation.
Program Quality8I liked the hours that were available. I liked the closeness of the students.
Instruction5I did not receive enough training on basic equipment. The first time I tried to use a very large copier I was definitely aggravated.
How Difficult5Did not seem to be that difficult. I enjoyed hands on work.
Hands-On vs. BookishSome equipment was hands on. Most was text books and computer programs.
Schedule Flexibility7They had both weekend and evening classes. I enjoyed the evening classes more.
Academic Facilities8The advisors were there on certain days and were helpful. There were plenty of computers on campus.
Social Life3I did not participate in any. Did not know of many.
Placement Services1We did not have any of that. Positions were posted on a bulletin board that was not kept updated.
Alumni NetworkI do not participate in the Alumni network. When I worked in the development office it seemed to be a large network.

Would Recommend?yesThey provide excellent training. They help you every step of the way.
Program Reputation8They are known around KY for their business school (Gatton). Many have been able to do well in this field after graduating.
Program Quality10I chose my university because of the great business college they offered. They helped me find the job I currently work at now.
Instruction8There is always something new out there and something new to learn. I believe I could have chosen better classes.
How Difficult7It was a fairly easy program to complete. The coursework was small.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was evenly distributed. You were given the opportunity to learn what you needed to learn from the book, and you were given hands-on experience.
Schedule Flexibility8I was given a vast array of options when I could take classes. They offered many courses online and during the summer.
Academic Facilities9Everyone was very knowledgeable and very helpful. They offered assistance whenever it was needed.
Social Life9They have an organization or club for everything and anything. You never felt out of place.
Placement Services9I was able to find internships and jobs through my university. I was given direction and help through the process.
Alumni Network9I was given many opportunities for internships. I still have connections to my school, even after graduation.
