Studying Word Processing (completion in 1989)

"I don't' feel that I received the schooling I should have for the amount of money I paid. If I were to do it over again I would not have gone to this school."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noThe school is no longer there, they went out of business.
Program Reputation1The school is no longer in business. They closed their doors shortly after I received my certificate.
Program Quality5It was a new school at the time and cost a lot of money to only receive a certificate.
Instruction5They would not pass me on the 10-key because I did not use 3 fingers. The instructors did not seem knowledgeable.
How Difficult1It was almost too easy. I seemed to have been able to teach the class myself.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was very hands-on. They gave a lot of "on the job" training.
Schedule Flexibility10You were able to make your own schedule. I was able to work 40 hours a week and still go to school.
Academic Facilities1There was no library and the school building was run down.
Social Life1No school spirit. Everyone seemed to just want to finish.
Placement Services1We were told that we were going to get help but when I used them as a reference they gave me a poor rating. When I called to ask why he said that he didn't feel that I could do the job.
Alumni Network1There was no alumni network or support. I never spoke to anyone from the school once "graduation" was over.

Delgado Community College • New Orleans, LA
Studying Business Administration (completion in 2009)

9/24/2011

"I wasn't challenged as much as I'd like. It is accommodating to working adults."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeI would encourage people to pursue their Bachelor's degree. This school is more of a stepping stone for those who are not ready or prepared for a four year school.
Program Reputation9Graduation rates are decent, this is really all I know.
Program Quality8The classes were too easy. I earned good grades, but I was not challenged.
Instruction8
How Difficult2
Hands-On vs. BookishMy classes consisted more of book learning. I'm sure it varies by degree program.
Schedule Flexibility9I wish they had more online courses. They did have plenty of evening and weekend classes.
Academic Facilities9I never had a problem getting in touch with my teachers. I'm not sure about everything else the campus had since I worked full-time and basically only attended my classes and went home.
Social Life8This is a community college so activities were not like those at a four year college. They did the best they could, but it was nothing special.
Alumni Network8I'm not too involved. They have plenty of events to encourage participation and communication among graduates.

Tulane • New Orleans, LA
Studying Computer Science (completion in 1984)

10/3/2011

"I was very satisfied. Unfortunately, students now won't be able to have the experiences I did, since the major no longer exists."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noThe major no longer exists, so I can't recommend it.
Program Reputation1After Hurricane Katrina, Tulane decided to eliminate the computer science major. There is no reputation now, since there is no major.
Program Quality9I got a very good education during my time at school. When I graduated, everyone who wanted a job got one, because there weren't as many computer science majors at that time.
Instruction10My professors were excellent and the course of study was very hard. We were very prepared to enter the workplace.
How Difficult9The course of study was very difficult, but good. Since computer science as a major was relatively new, it was changing rapidly to meet the needs of the students.
Hands-On vs. BookishObviously there was book-learning, but in a major like computer science, it had to be hands on. All programming was real and everything had to work.
Schedule Flexibility5I guess it was average. I took the classes I needed and had to take them when they were offered. Sometimes there were choices and sometimes there weren't.
Academic Facilities8The facilities were pretty good. There were usually enough terminals at that time to go around. I'm sure the facilities now are completely different.
Social Life10I had a great time at school. It's hard not to have a good time in New Orleans.
Placement Services9I had a job on campus that I got through the placement center. I also used them to obtain a summer position and later career placement.

University Of Louisiana At Lafayette • Lafayette, LA
Studying Mass Communications (completion in 2005)

"I love my school! It would get a 10 if it had more online courses/degrees/certificates."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesWithout a doubt, I would recommend UL to anyone pursuing any degree. It is a fantastic university!
Program Reputation9UL still holds a great reputation in the communications field. I believe I would secure a great job with my degree in a larger city.
Program Quality9My university had a spectacular communications program; however, my major building was in disrepair. I hear that this has been corrected.
Instruction9Instructors were knowledgeable and well versed: more than 60% held PhDs. One of my adjunct instructors actually worked at a television station in the community which was a major plus!
How Difficult7My concentration was not as difficult as other majors but it was extremely labor intensive. It also took many late nights in the editing booth.
Hands-On vs. BookishMy degree was my hands on. I spent many hours in labs producing/editing news content and stories.
Schedule Flexibility7The school offers traditional classes, evening, and I believe some weekend. The only downside is the online offerings... they still have a fledgling online program, so not many classes/degrees are offered online.
Academic Facilities9One whole hall is dedicated to tutoring and resources. School has a phenomenal library with state-of-the-art computer and library resources.
Social Life10I participated in a sorority (AOPi) and the marching band. The school possesses an abundance of spirit!
Placement Services8It has good job placement service. I was just not looking to leave the area when I graduated college.
Alumni Network10My school has a fantastic alumni network. Most alums are extremely loyal and there is a great website to go to for all school information.

Instruction10All of my instructors were PhDs who had worked in their field of study. They offered real life examples.
How Difficult8The program was challenging and is highly rated.
Hands-On vs. BookishThere was an excellent mix. All of the instructors had real life experience.
Schedule Flexibility10The program was accelerated with multiple delivery channels. You could take classes face to face or online.
Academic Facilities7I only used the online resources. The were very extensive.
Social Life4I attended class on a satellite campus. I was a non-traditional student.
Placement Services5I receive information from them monthly. I have not had a need to use it.
Alumni Network5I receive information from them monthly. I have not had a need to use it.

McNeese State University • Lake Charles, LA
Studying Mechanical Engineering (completion in 2004)

12/28/2011

"I was very satisfied with my education. I felt very prepared, even if I didn't plan to get a license."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesAll the professors are PhDs and have at least 5 years experience in the industry. A good foothold.
Program ReputationI've been away from LA too long to know. I'm also not in that industry anymore.
Program Quality7I was happy with my education. I would have liked more contact with the industry.
Instruction9I felt very prepared for the industry. There was one bad teacher; I retook that class with a different professor.
How Difficult5I do think it was challenging. Once I got momentum, it was easier.
Hands-On vs. BookishA good mix of both. Labs were fun!
Schedule Flexibility10I thought it was accommodating. It worked for me.
Academic Facilities10I was pleased. I found the support I needed.
Social Life5It was fun. I was married and lived at Fort Polk most of the time; too far away to really engage.
Placement ServicesI did not use their service. After 2 years, I was married and planned to move to the duty station in Germany.
Alumni Network5I get alumni emails. I choose to ignore them.

DeVry University • Dallas, LA
Studying Technical Management (completion in 2005)

12/28/2011

"Very expensive school. School doesn't put effort into being state of the art or modern."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noThis school was a racket; it costs top dollar, and in return, it provides poor instruction with outdated materials and equipment.
Program Reputation1Told by hiring managers that the school's reputation in the industry is very poor. DeVry graduates are viewed as substandard in the industry.
Program Quality1Poor preparation for real-world scenarios in the industry. Degree from DeVry is not considered an asset to most hiring managers.
Instruction3Outdated information taught by people who do not have command of the English language. Professors were not able to communicate effectively.
How Difficult5Barebones, basic info. Much of the info was outdated at the time it was being taught.
Hands-On vs. Bookish100% book learning. Very few labs, and most labs are missing equipment or have broken equipment. Labs are locked, to deter students from using them.
Schedule Flexibility10Non-English-speaking professors who really do not care if you show up or not. Online classes offer the best flexibility for most.
Academic Facilities3Below-average equipment. Outdated and broken equipment in many classrooms.
Social Life5Small campus makes it easier to get to know everyone. Very few clubs and organizations.
Placement Services5If they get you into a job, you are not fully prepared for it. They are only interested in high placement numbers, not quality of work or career.
Alumni Network3DeVry only cares about placement records. If you cannot be placed quickly, they lose interest.
