University Of Montana • Missoula, MT
Studying Anthropology/French (completion in 1999)

9/11/2011

"I think my school prepared me to deal with a great variety of cultures and world views. While I didn't get much career support or individual assistance, I took as much as I could from the academic aspect, and I am a much better person (and adult) today than I would've been had I not gone to college."

Would Recommend?maybeWhile the program was above-average when I went there, both departments have shrunk and I wouldn't be able to make a good assessment of their quality now.
Program Reputation7The French program is thought highly of and they have a partnership with a school in France. The anthropology program has shrunk in recent years, but still houses a number of excellent professors.
Program Quality7Most of my professors were wonderful, very knowledgeable and personable. I have kept most of the texts I used, as I found them interesting and insightful. However, the general requirement courses were fairly boring. It wasn't until I got into the higher level classes that I found the subject very rewarding to study.
Instruction8Most of the courses were quite vigorous, some of them overwhelmingly so. Career preparation wasn't stressed, but the curriculum afforded not only a broad overview of each subject within the degree, but there were several specialized classes dealing with specific aspects of each subject which allowed for career specialization.
How Difficult7As I progressed into higher level classes, the workload increased dramatically. I wrote at least a dozen papers each semester and, particularly with my French major, I read at least two dozen textbooks and foreign language novels.
Hands-On vs. BookishI never read as many books and wrote as many papers as when I got into the upper division classes, in both my Anthropology and French majors. My majors were more intellectual in nature rather than hands-on; there wasn't a lab in either major though this wasn't a problem.
Schedule Flexibility3It's too small a school for there to be a great variety of times available for each class. In the upper division courses; you often had only one choice.
Academic Facilities9The library and computer facilities are extensive and easily accessible. There is plenty of classroom space and the classes are held in a specific area of the campus so it's not necessary to travel a long way between classes. I didn't have very good access to my advisor but almost any professor was available for the occasional meeting to discuss career and school choices.
Social Life5I wasn't really social enough to spend a lot of time at the various activities on campus, but I know there were many. They ranged from sporting events to concerts, Greek societies and socials.
Placement Services3I tried to use the career services but it didn't go well. It consisted mostly of shelves of files containing information and there was very little personal assistance.
Alumni Network5I haven't been part of the alumni network. I do get the occasional alumni magazine, but that's about it.
