Marshall University • Huntington, WV

"I am satisfied with my education. Some classes are still very vivid and remarkable to me. I was not satisfied with the career counseling available at Marshall."

Would Recommend?maybeI would recommend to anyone thinking about attending Marshall University, sit down with an advisor and tell them your interests and hobbies. Tell them what you enjoy and where you want to be. Let them counsel you on options, and study them very hard. Marshall is a great school, but make sure you are who you think you are.
Program Reputation8Marshall has several published professors in Political Science and some of the most interesting people I've ever met. I would rate their Political Science department in the top tier of all US public institutions.
Program Quality7MU had a good political science program and several excellent professors. They had a depth and breadth of knowledge that I hadn't experienced before in any setting.
Instruction5The curriculum was very interesting, but didn't translate over to a good career field. The school did not do much in the area of providing me career advice or preparation, but the quality of the classroom training was great.
How Difficult4My area of study was fairly easy, but then again, it was very interesting to me. Some of the classes required 20-page papers every two weeks, while others were reliant only on two tests during the entire semester.
Hands-On vs. BookishSeveral professors were book-focused and several were experience-focused. I think that the mix was well balanced in the political science program.
Schedule Flexibility8Class schedules were very flexible. I was able to take classes that interested me in a manner that made sense. There were not forced classes during a certain time, but there were one or two "bottleneck" classes that everyone needed. But two tries and I was able to get in, so no problem.
Academic Facilities9I think their academic facilities are top-notch. The new Drinko Library is state of the art, and huge renovations of much of the rest of the school have brought Marshall into the 21st century.
Social Life2I am not a social person, so most of my time was spent at the library. But the opportunities were there.
Placement Services2I was not able to get a lot of help from the career placement office at Marshall. They gave me lots of leads and helped with my resume, but that was it. I would have liked to have networked with some local people and set up meetings, but it wasn't offered.
Alumni NetworkI have not plugged into the alumni network at Marshall, but the alumni magazine that I get quarterly is very nice. I believe MU has a good alumni network available, but I'm sort of a loner.

West Virginia Wesleyan College • Buckhannon, WV
Studying Computer Information Science (completion in 2004)

"I take great pride in being a graduate of WVWC and graduating magna cum laude. In today's work environment, it seems to be more important that you have a degree at all, instead of what particular field your degree is in."

Would Recommend?yesYes, but I would let others know to choose the Computer Science field versus the Computer Information Science field, if they want any real-world knowledge of computers. They need to better distinguish the two fields.
Program Reputation7I am not sure of the reputation of my particular major, but the school itself has a great reputation. It is known for being a strong source of education.
Program Quality5My major was CIS, a combination of computer and business courses. I do not feel I received a well enough education on the computer side of my major, as I do not know many simple computer tasks others think I should know.
Instruction5I wish the computer courses consisted of more "real to life" scenarios. I also do not feel I received enough help for career prep after graduation.
How Difficult7I was an excellent student and graduated magna cum laude. Others found the work harder than I did.
Hands-On vs. BookishIt was a good mix of hands on and book learning. This was good, because it covered the bases, no matter which type of learner you were.
Schedule Flexibility6I did not take any evening or weekend courses, so I did not pay attention to those offerings. I did take a couple summer courses, which were very convenient.
Academic Facilities8The professors always seemed willing to go above and beyond and help. The facilities were nice as well, and they've recently been expanding and upgrading.
Social LifeI have social anxiety disorder, so I really didn't look into social experiences. It seemed like they had an adequate amount of opportunities.
Placement Services2I got assistance with my resume and cover letter, but that is all the job placement assistance I received. I wish they did more.
Alumni Network5I receive seemingly random correspondence. It's nice that I get invites to upcoming events on campus, but I wish there were more chances to connect, such as something online.
