Carroll College • Helena, MT
Studying Computer Science And Applied Mathematics (Two Separate Degrees) (completion in 2011)

"I had a great time at Carroll, I learned a lot, and I got a good job out of it. I wish the CS program was more rigorous, but my experience with the Math department helped me to think critically and problem solve well."

Would Recommend?maybeFrom what I have seen of Montana State University's Computer Science program, I would recommend that over Carroll's. However, the mixture of Mathematics and Computer Science I got from my Carroll education is invaluable.
Program ReputationCarroll College is too small to have the individual programs ranked. I do know that Carroll's Math department competes every year in international math competitions, and does very well. However, in CS we were never given the option to do anything like that.
Program Quality4I also got a degree in Applied Mathematics, and that program was amazing. However, the Computer Science program was rather lacking. We were never taught any languages besides Java (and Assembly in Computer Architecture). After my Sophomore year we did zero coding, and all the classes were focused on IT related disciplines.
Instruction8My professors were very knowledgeable, it was just the curriculum was lacking. I think this is mainly due to the majority of CS graduates from Carroll go on to work in IT.
How Difficult2I am pretty gifted when it comes to CS stuff. I barely had to try to get A's. I know some of my classmates had a hard time and struggled to get C's, but for me the classes were a breeze.
Hands-On vs. BookishJust about every concept we learned, there was an associated lab to go with it. We learned by working on projects and labs, not just by attending lectures.
Schedule Flexibility1There is only one section of each class per school year. This isn't really much of a problem though because there were only 6 people who graduated with me in Computer Science.
Academic Facilities8So libraries, media, academic advisors, availability of tutors and study group support were not existent, but I don't really think they were necessary. Professors were more than happy to help us out in any way possible, so there isn't really a need for tutors, and academic advisors weren't really needed because the program was pretty much laid out in the course handbook. We had our own locked classroom that only Computer Science students had access to.
Social Life8I had a great time as an undergrad. It was probably the most fun I have ever had in my life. I had a good group of friends that all shared similar interests and were in the same classes. As for athletics, I didn't care much for them.
Placement Services7I got a couple job offers from previous Carroll grads. We were also required as part of our Senior Seminar class to network with people working in the field. I, however, got my current job from a summer internship.
Alumni NetworkI graduated not even a year ago, so I haven't had much of an opportunity to interact with the alumni network. I know that one exists, though.
