"I wouldn't change a thing about Brown. I think it is one of the best options for CS."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesGiven my experience at Brown, I would definitely recommend it to others. The quality of learning and the opportunities given are totally worth the hard work!
Program Reputation10I think that Brown's computer science program is one of the most famous in the country. The quality is excellent.
Program Quality9I think that Brown has one of the best programs for computer science in the country. They have excellent professors that demand that their students really get involved in the classes. Almost all students teaching TA classes have taken the class in the past, and that helps a lot to understand the material even better.
Instruction9New courses are added every year. There were courses on building applications for Android and courses on information retrieval in which you actually build a search engine. Almost all the students in my class got great jobs!
How Difficult9The work load was too heavy from time to time. There have been weeks during the semester where we didn't even have time to sleep. There were even classes with 2 (programming) assignments every week. Many problem sets were extremely challenging.
Hands-On vs. BookishI would say that they keep a balance. It definitely depends on the classes one is taking.
Schedule Flexibility5I don't think that Brown's schedule was very flexible. There were sometimes extra hours on weekends and evenings (mostly taught by TA's), but not always.
Academic Facilities7Facilities and resources were OK but could have been better. The department's building is nice and new but there are not enough laboratories given the current number of students.
Social Life9Brown is famous for having the happiest students! There are many social events for undergrads and grads, and Providence is a great small city full of amazing restaurants.
Placement Services9We had talks and seminars from big companies almost every week in the department. It was a great opportunity to make connections and give interviews for jobs. We had great help with CV preparation, recommendation letters, etc.
Alumni Network8Although I don't have great experience with the alumni network, I can say that I am satisfied. We had many talks/seminars during the semester from old brown students who are now in big companies.
