"I was hoping to get promoted faster and thus get bigger raises with ASE certifications, but that hasn't happened. Some of my ASEs have expired and my employer doesn't care."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | If there's an incentive program (i.e. get paid more for having certifications), then I'd definitely recommend it. But I honestly feel I learn more being in the shop. |
| Program Reputation | 7 | ASEs are the standard for all the shops I know of. Not all shops require most, if any, of them. Having ASE certifications can help you get better jobs, but not always better pay. |
| Program Quality | 6 | The ASEs have helped me in diagnosing. They aren't always spot on or realistic. |
| Instruction | 4 | The "instruction" consisted of study guides and manuals. I learned more from hands on experience in the shop. |
| How Difficult | 4 | It wasn't difficult at all. After studying the manuals, I learned how to answer the questions correctly. My previous experience as an installer helped tremendously. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | The ASEs are based on the books. The tests are also based on the manuals. Although studying the books helped, it was the real life experience that helped me the most. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 9 | The tests are extremely flexible. You can take written tests or go online to take them. They offer them several times a year as well. |
| Academic Facilities | There were study guides and practice tests online, but there weren't any "facilities." | |
| Social Life | They were online so there was no social experience for me. | |
| Placement Services | There is no job placement that I know of. Usually it's the employer that requires/asks you to take these tests. | |
| Alumni Network | I don't think there is an "alumni" network. I do have to take the tests after a certain amount of time to re-qualify, however. |
