"I was hoping to get promoted faster and thus get bigger raises with ASE certifications, but that hasn't happened. Some of my ASEs have expired and my employer doesn't care."

Would Recommend?maybeIf there's an incentive program (i.e. get paid more for having certifications), then I'd definitely recommend it. But I honestly feel I learn more being in the shop.
Program Reputation7ASEs are the standard for all the shops I know of. Not all shops require most, if any, of them. Having ASE certifications can help you get better jobs, but not always better pay.
Program Quality6The ASEs have helped me in diagnosing. They aren't always spot on or realistic.
Instruction4The "instruction" consisted of study guides and manuals. I learned more from hands on experience in the shop.
How Difficult4It wasn't difficult at all. After studying the manuals, I learned how to answer the questions correctly. My previous experience as an installer helped tremendously.
Hands-On vs. BookishThe ASEs are based on the books. The tests are also based on the manuals. Although studying the books helped, it was the real life experience that helped me the most.
Schedule Flexibility9The tests are extremely flexible. You can take written tests or go online to take them. They offer them several times a year as well.
Academic FacilitiesThere were study guides and practice tests online, but there weren't any "facilities."
Social LifeThey were online so there was no social experience for me.
Placement ServicesThere is no job placement that I know of. Usually it's the employer that requires/asks you to take these tests.
Alumni NetworkI don't think there is an "alumni" network. I do have to take the tests after a certain amount of time to re-qualify, however.
