UNC-Chapel Hill • Chapel Hill, NC
Studying Library Science (completion in 2008)

"With the exception of the cost, and the lack of job finding support, the school is excellent. I have considered a PhD because of the quality of this school."

Would Recommend?maybeI have actually been in this "career" since high school. I have been keeping records for many years. This type of job is good for those who love routine tasks with the occasional brain teaser. For the creative types, it may be too routine to handle.
Program Reputation9UNC has an excellent reputation, both overall and for the library program, which is rated the best in the country.
Program Quality3UNC is great for teaching librarians. However, they aren't helpful with finding jobs.
Instruction10The instruction is great. It is provided by library professionals both in the field and in academia.
How Difficult3It seems easy, but it is a lot of work. It also prepares you for management positions.
Hands-On vs. BookishThis program is exceedingly hands-on. Every class I took had a component which can be tied to a real life aspect of the job.
Schedule Flexibility5The schedule tends to favor the nontraditional student. I had a night class every semester.
Academic Facilities10The professors and staff are wonderful about support, both academic and in general. I am still in contact with several.
Social Life8I did not take advantage of the social aspect as much as I should have, or as much as an undergraduate might. It was graduate school, and a lot of work.
Placement Services1I went to school to be a librarian. I have ended up a clerk in a car dealership because I could not find a job. There is very little support.

"I got a good education. It has served me well in my career. I continue to take continuing education classes there."

Would Recommend?yesVance Granville provides a good education for the amount spent. Also, if you are not in a position to move to another area for college, this one can give you what you want to start a career or change one later in life.
Program Reputation5For the area this community college is very well respected. They have used the press wisely to get information about themselves out.
Program Quality10I got a good education there. The professors were very helpful throughout the learning process.
Instruction10The professors there at the time were very good at explaining the subjects I was taking. If there were any questions they were there to help.
How Difficult5I do not feel the program of study was too hard or too easy. There was a regular amount of homework involved for the subjects I was taking.
Hands-On vs. BookishBook learning is foremost for the Business degree I have. The hands on approach comes from professors that show the students through examples and bring in guests to lecture.
Schedule Flexibility10Vance Granville offers many options to finish a degree program. At the time I was not working so I could take advantage of the classes offered during the week.
Academic Facilities10There is ample access to professors if you need help. There are good resources that can be used by students that is updated.
Social Life9This college brings together the students through clubs and social events. Since starting an athletics program there is even more reason for students to get together and root for the college team.
Placement Services10I was offered a job even before I finished my studies. They have a good placement record for students after finishing the Business Administration course of study.
Alumni Network5I do not know about other colleges and their alumni networks. This one is probably not the best nor the worst for keeping up with former students.
