Student/Alumnus Reviews of Schools for This Career and State
Regent University • Virginia Beach, VA
Studying Interdisciplinary Studies/Elementary Education (completion in 2008)

• 9/9/2011
"Regent was cheap for an out-of-state student. The schedule was flexible in ways that other nearby universities were not. The quality of learning will get you through, and you'll learn much more of what you need when you're actually in a classroom. However, there is a LOT of room for improvement here."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | It depends on their situation. If they were working full time 9-5, I might recommend it. If they could go somewhere else without too much hassle, I'd probably recommend somewhere else. |
| Program Reputation | 5 | It's a small school in an area with many colleges and universities in a close radius. They portray themselves as having a strong program, and I think their educational majors are fairly popular. |
| Program Quality | 5 | They gave me what I needed to get my state credential, but I didn't feel that the quality of the program was very high. The coursework was limited and the professors were of highly varying quality - some were very good, others were not at all. I transferred here from another college which had a much better program in my opinion. |
| Instruction | 5 | Teacher credentialing is state-regulated, and Regent's program met all of their requirements. I did not, however, feel that the amount of learning was as high as I would have liked and was unequally weighted among subjects. They did integrate practical application into each class, which was a very good thing. |
| How Difficult | 6 | There was a significant amount of homework and out-of-class assignments for several classes, which in some cases was very difficult to complete. Other classes required significant amounts of time but were less rigorous. Overall, I would say it was a slightly higher than average workload. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | We had to do classroom observations and student teaching, which is pretty hands-on. Our book learning, including theories and information on learning disabilities, etc. was important also. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 10 | Regent is targeted towards working adults, so their schedules are extremely flexible. Classes meet online as well as during weekends and evenings. |
| Academic Facilities | 4 | There is no lab space at all, but the library is easily accessible and includes online access to databases, etc. The academic advisor I had (now gone) was absolutely terrible - incredibly difficult to contact and not knowledgeable about the program. Most professors were easily accessible, however, and usually willing to help; one or two were entirely inflexible and apparently not looking to help their students. |
| Social Life | 1 | When I was attending, there was no on-campus living and most students only saw each other during night classes once a week. Social activity was pretty non-existent in the school. |
| Placement Services | 4 | If I were to have stayed in the area, my student teaching experiences may well have led to a job. However, the school itself didn't do anything specifically to help me find a job, and I don't think they offer anything other than a sparse online job board. |
| Alumni Network | 5 | I don't really participate in any alumni support. I have moved out of the area and there isn't a nearby chapter, but I think there are some online resources. I don't use them, so I don't feel qualified to judge them. |
