Employment Requirements
An associate degree in broadcast technology, computer networking, electronics or a related subject are generally recommended. Many of the positions require a bachelor's degree. Small stations typically seek applicants who have general skills and large stations typically require previous experience. Large stations value specialized skills. Broadcast technicians need a solid foundation in electronics and information technology.
Certification provided by the Society of Broadcast Engineers is given to experienced technicians who pass an examination. The certification may help individuals advance in their careers.
The major employment sectors are television stations, radio stations, movies, sound recording and video.
How to Evaluate Schools and Programs
The answers to the following questions can help students select the appropriate school:
- Training - Does the program provide plenty of hands-on training with the latest equipment? Does the program include an externship? Do students have a variety of externship choices?
- School's Reputation - Is the school recognized for its broadcasting technician program?
- Job Placement - Are students provided job placement services? Do employers of broadcast technicians recruit students at the school? Does the school provide job fairs?
- Curriculum - What type of electives are offered? Can students select an area of specialization?
- Financial Aid - What types of financial aid are available? Is the school qualified to provide federal financial aid?
- Accreditation - Is the school accredited by an agency which has been approved by the the United States Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education?
Broadcast Technicians Job Description
Broadcast technicians operate and maintain broadcasting equipment used to transmit television and radio shows. They also work on movies. They use the equipment for live productions and for recording broadcasts. Broadcast technicians use equipment such as cameras, microphones, console tape recorders and computers.
Broadcast technicians who work for small radio or television stations typically perform a variety of tasks. Those employed by large stations usually have a specialty. Some of the specialties are transmitter operator, audio control engineer, maintenance technician, recording engineer, video control engineer, video recording operator, field technician and projectionist.

- Direct technical personnel during filming
- Monitor clarity, strength and reliability of incoming and outgoing signals
- Regulate the volume and sound quality during television and radio broadcasts
- Observe monitors and collaborate with station personnel to determine audio and video levels
- Regulate the brightness, fidelity and contrast of video transmissions using video console control panels
- Choose sources from which programming will be received or through which programming will be transmitted
