"I was happy with my classes and instructors. They gave the skills I needed for my job."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | I wouldn't because there are better schools. I attended solely for financial reasons. |
| Program Reputation | 4 | UNLV is not nationally known for the quality of its Computer Science programs, undergrad or at the graduate level. Many of my peers are surprised that that I attended UNLV, based upon the position I hold and quality of my work. |
| Program Quality | 7 | UNLV's computer science facilities are only average for a major research university. The areas for concentration were limited compared to other schools I was interested in attending. My decision to attend UNLV as opposed to UCLA was solely financial. |
| Instruction | No rating since I graduated in 2001. | |
| How Difficult | 6 | My area of concentration was database design and analysis. The quality of instruction was of slightly above average and not very challenging considering my 25+ years of air force training. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | Very hands-on and skills directed. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 5 | In 2001 when I attended UNLV classes were generally available as needed. There was no shortage of classes or facilities. |
| Academic Facilities | 7 | The Lied Library and Hughes Technology Center opened during my tenure at the school and they provided excellent facilities for computer science students. I was very pleased with access to technology, classroom space, etc. |
| Social Life | 5 | UNLV is mostly a commuter school, so the social life is limited. But the school has nationally ranked basketball & baseball teams. The school offers a wide range for activities for students |
| Placement Services | 3 | UNLV does a poor job of getting IT recruiters on campus and provides little support for employers looking for specific talents. In the nine years since I graduated no one for the university has ever contacted me about job placement or career services. |
| Alumni Network | 4 | The alumni network is almost non-existent and career development at the university is lacking. I listed available positions with the Computer Science department and receive no follow ups or referrals. |
