"I gave it a 6 as it landed me a nice job! The reputation of the school is all that matters. In all honesty I have seen very few schools that have programs that are truly geared towards working in the industry."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | maybe | If you can't get into top US schools like MIT or even University of Washington, and if you could not get into Waterloo in Canada, then totally! Go for it. It is a ton better than most other universities. |
| Program Reputation | 9 | I think University of Toronto is very well known. At Microsoft it was one of the schools that we regularly hired from. I attended a couple of recruiting events there. |
| Program Quality | 7 | University of Toronto has a very strong academic program (especially in the computer science department). However, they do not have a strong way to connect students to the industry, especially compared to the University of Waterloo. That school has a co-op program that places students in various industries every 6 months. By the end of the program, students are well trained, connected, and familiar with the industry. |
| Instruction | 4 | I can honestly say a good portion of what is taught in school is completely useless and too theoretical. Unfortunately, schools (universities) are not designed to create good programmers/testers and developers, etc. |
| How Difficult | 8 | University of Toronto does have a relatively challenging program. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | U of T is a very academic school as I explained earlier. Not much emphasis on hands on programming compared to theory. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 5 | U of T is a large school with many, many resources. |
| Academic Facilities | 5 | I don't know about now, though when I was there we were still using very old computers in the labs. But when I was visiting recently, I noticed the new labs and facilities they have put together. All and all, I still say it's average. |
| Social Life | 5 | Most students in the CS department are guys and are from China. I didn't experience much of a social life. It was a just-suck-it-up-and-study kind of school. However, I was a lifeguard while I was there and I interacted with people in other programs. |
| Placement Services | 5 | In my experience it was very poor compared to the University of Waterloo. There is not a lot that the school does to connect you. However, I have to be fair - I did get my first job through a job fair at U of T. |
| Alumni Network | Since I left Toronto right after graduation to come to Redmond, I really did not connect with the alumni programs. I see some reunions and meetings here and there, though I've never attended one. |
