"The lower level classes were too big. No one ever got on my case for missing lecture or recitation. Sink or swim, in that regard."
Ratings are on a 1-10 scale
| Characteristic | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Would Recommend? | yes | Cal has one of the best computer science programs in the country. I'd rate it below Stanford and MIT, but it's also a lot cheaper if you're in-state. |
| Program Reputation | 9 | Still one of the best in the country. Apparently Google pumped some money into the program, and they teach Hadoop and distributed processing in the first semester now. |
| Program Quality | 9 | Berkeley's CS program teaches fundamentals in Scheme. This has gone on to inform the modern languages I do in my day to day work in JavaScript and horizon languages like Scala. I really appreciate the grounding in functional programming in addition to the object oriented framework that was significantly more prevalent ten years ago. |
| Instruction | 8 | The content of the program was excellent. The lectures and teaching methodology were only on par. I learned much more on my own in the computer lab hacking away than I did at lecture. |
| How Difficult | 9 | I failed CS61A my first semester and had to retake it. Most of my computer courses involved multiple projects per semester, and I always only squeaked by to meet deadline, and sometimes not even that. Just like the real thing. |
| Hands-On vs. Bookish | The program was more hands on than book driven. Most courses involved multiple open-ended projects that involved a lot of coding, a lot of trial-and-error. | |
| Schedule Flexibility | 7 | I took summer classes on two occasions. I never had any problem getting the classes I needed during summer session. |
| Academic Facilities | 7 | Professors were accessible. Computer lab was my second home. The dorms were wired up with unmetered T1 internet access in every room. |
| Social Life | 3 | I was never really part of the social scene at Cal. In fact, it was pretty miserable. Once I moved into my own apartment out of the dorms, I stopped talking to other people on a regular basis. |
| Placement Services | 5 | I know they exist, though I didn't make use of the services myself. Not one of my friends from school found a silicon valley job, but several of my Stanford friends did... |
| Alumni Network | I don't have a lot of experience with this. I met my current business partners long after graduation in Los Angeles. I've never made use of the alumni network for employment. |
